Monday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 10:34-11:1

Jesus said to His Apostles: "Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother -in-law; and one's enemies will be those of his household.

"Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

"Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is righteous will receive a righteous man's reward. And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple--amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward."

When Jesus finished giving these commands to his Twelve disciples, he went away from that place to teach and to preach in their towns.

The Gospel of the Lord.

REFLECTIONS: " I have come to bring not peace but the sword."

Jesus chose twelve men to teach and instruct his people. He first had to teach the disciples.

He chose weak men who were just "doing their thing, surviving, working and enjoying their family". But he asked them to be a part of his army--the spiritual army , that is, with spiritual swords. With his teachings he has equipped the apostles and has continued to equip us. We are asked to be spiritual soldiers, equipped with his Word and to cut down or remove sinful evil thoughts, lies, deceptions, cruelty, lack of love and hate WITH JUST HIS LOVE, HIS GRACE, HIS WORD.

What is this spiritual weapon, this Word? It is the teachings he gave to the apostles handed down to us through the generations. Jesus' teaching and preaching is the sword of the Holy Spirit--we have been instructed and given the power to destroy every spiritual stronghold, bondage and deception with the Holy Spirit as our commander.

Jesus came to fight and disarm the power of this world. He came to turn our minds and hearts to God. We are to be with God and against the world that is under the power of satan. The world are those who oppose God, his truth, goodness and righteousness. God wants us to serve him with boundless mercy, compassion and goodness for his people.

We are not to put this as a side activity, to bring it out on weekends or church gathering. We are to work for God all the time--even over family, for the love of God compels us to choose who will be first in our lives. We are asked to love God above all things and to be willing to forsake all for Jesus Christ.

PRAYER: Please show us how to serve you, God, and your kingdom. Teach us how we are to work for you, but let us be aware that we are not asked to forsake our family--but to put God over our family.

Pray for God's army of priests.

God Bless
