A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 9: 2-10
Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John, and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents : one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. " He hardly knew what to say, they were terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, " This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. " Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.
As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.
The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
REFLECTIONS:
In today's readings, Jesus showed his full majesty. He was not a physically changed Jesus, but He revealed His divinity. He appeared with Moses and Elijah. Jesus allowed His disciples to catch a glimpse of the glory of God through His being transfigured in glory. His face became radiant and his clothing became dazzling white. In today's reading from the Book of the Prophet Daniel 7:9-10,13-14, Daniel's visions foretold of God sending His Anointed One, the Son of Man, who would come on the clouds of heaven to bring God's reign of glory and righteousness on earth. The Son of Man is a Messianic title for God's Anointed One and in the New Testament Messiah is Christ meaning the "Anointed One" or the "Anointed King".
Jesus had told his disciples that he would undergo suffering and death. Just as Moses and Elijah were led up the mountain, to discern their mission and calling, so Jesus appears with both Moses and Elijah on the highest mountain . As with Moses and Elijah, Christ, too was to fulfill the mission that God had given him to accomplish.
Jesus not only wants us to see his glory but to share this glory with us. God said, " This is my beloved Son, listen to him". We, too, are asked to listen to him. Jesus shows us the path to take--to follow him and embrace our crosses. And one day we will, too, share in the glory that God wants to give to us.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, we have been shown what awaits us if we listen to you. We pray for the weak and frail priests--may they find the courage to follow your word, to work tirelessly for others and to help all their flock reach the glory that awaits us. Amen.
