Gospel Mt 17:14-20

A man came up to Jesus, knelt down before him, and said, "Lord, have pity on my son, who is a lunatic and suffers severely; often he falls into fire, and often into water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him." Jesus said in reply, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring the boy here to me." Jesus rebuked him and the demon came out of him, and from that hour the boy was cured. Then the disciples approached Jesus in private and said, "Why could we not drive it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Reflection:

Faith is to have complete trust. But do we trust God in prayer and have complete trust in his power?

All power comes from God and to contemplate the great power of God we can look to the evidence around us. The forces of nature such as tornados, hurricanes, heat waves, and earthquakes can teach us about the power of God. These are tangible disasters that influence us in a negative way. However, the great beauty God has given us in landforms, plants, animals, and bodies of water also have great power to give peace and joy. What power God has to change hearts as one spends time with the beauty in his creation!

The Word of God has power. We can use these words, speaking with confidence and love, for the sole purpose of giving God glory. Our simple words are handed over to God and he fills them with the power of the Spirit. The sick are cured and evil spirits are driven out. A flat piece of bread is turned into the body of Christ and wine into blood. All are possible, if said with faith. Miracles await us for the breath of life to permeate, if words are spoken in faith.

I encourage you to spend time contemplating the awesome power of our God and think what is holding you back from really trusting God in all things. If you look deeply and surrender to God’s power, you just might understand he has given us everything we need to believe and trust.
