A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 10:21-24
At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”
REFLECTION: " revealed them to little children".
Before I left on my vacation this summer, my 4 year old granddaughter asked me to bring her a "princess doll". Wanting to be the "bela" that I wanted her to remember, I looked all over Montreal for that princess doll. I found a beautiful 12 inch Indian princess doll . And when she saw it she said," You remembered"!!
That doll had a life span of 24 hours!! It was left at a restaurant and never to be found again. I went back to the restaurant, looked all over my home, but never found the doll. I was so sad it was lost--I was holding on to the past, all my efforts in finding the perfect doll, and to that material beauty of the doll .-- but my granddaughter happily moved on. She now wanted to read books and color.
Her sweet innocence reminded me of Matthew 18:2-6--"Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven".
If we come to God with empty hands, He will fill them up. Again and Again. But if we approach God with all our attachments, with our hands full of ourselves, He will find no place to put Himself. We should approach God with humility and openness. My Zoey showed me that it was not the doll that mattered but it was the gift given with love. God works like that. He wants us to be totally dependent on Him and to incline our hearts to simplicity, grace and truth. He is our Father, what more than His love, given to us as a gift, do we want?
