MONDAY OF THE TWENTY-SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Olivia M. Bannan

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 9:46-50

An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest." Then John said in reply, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company." Jesus said to him, "Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you."

REFLECTION: "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me,and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."

At the bank we met a young bank officer. She was showing us pictures of her seven month old son, Eshan--meaning made in God's grace with perfection, compassion, and obedience. The mom had a nine year old daughter and now this little one. As all mothers do and say, she wanted to cherish the baby as the years go by very fast. This time she dedicated her child to God.

A child is the image of God, given to us as a gift. They are innocent, free, and can spend all day playing, not at all aware of the time. They are dependent on their parents for their food, nourishment, care and overall well being. They were created to love and to be loved.

When Jesus saw the apostles arguing about their position in God's kingdom, He knew their pride. And for this He reminded them that in the eyes of God, it is the child in us, not knowing any more than the love of a parent, is what He wants for us. Total surrender/ total abandonment to God.

So let’s put out our hands and let God take hold of our lives. Let Him show us the right paths, let Him pull us out of the mud. And let His will play out for we are His children and His love for us is perfect.

God Bless
