MONDAY OF THE THIRD WEEK OF EASTER APRIL 19, 2021

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 6:22-29

[After Jesus had fed the five thousand men, his disciples saw him walking on the sea.] The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left. Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks. When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him across the sea they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.” So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.”

REFLECTION:

"You get a car! You get a car! Everybody gets a car!" Oprah made TV history—and coined a new catchphrase—when she gave a brand new car to every member of her audience during the 19th season premiere of The Oprah Show.

Many people will follow a celebrity, a show or a team based on what they get out of the relationship. Some people will go to Church and want to be entertained. Others keep a timer and the homily better be less than 10 minutes or the Bishop or Cardinal will hear about it.

Many will stand in line for Black Friday sales, fight their way for that perfect present and will follow the coupons for better savings. Some will overbuy like the "toilet paper 2020 Covid buyout" because they can't think of doing without, much less sharing.

The world is becoming more and more "what will I get out of it".

Jesus asked the followers, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled." Yet, He was standing right in front of them offering His own Body and Blood. Imagine God made man emptied Himself so that we could receive all the gifts He can give us. He paid our debt owed by our sins and yet, ignorance, stupidity, hardened hearts or something else did not allow them to have a clear understanding of what they were turning down.

Don't live for the material physical world but live for our eternal reward.

God Bless You
