May 20 2018 – Scripture Reading Reflection

Gospel JN 15:26-27;16:12-15

Jesus said to his disciples:

"When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me.

And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

"I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.

But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.

He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears,

and will declare to you the things that are coming.

He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you."

Reflection

Today we celebrate Pentecost. We welcome the Holy Spirit as a life-restoring gift from Jesus filled with many spiritual blessings necessary to fulfill the rest of our mission as His disciples.

Our response is:

Lord, send out your Spirit; and renew the face of the earth (PS 104: 30)

To be instrumental in “renewing” the face of the earth, we must be vigilant and be prepared for all sorts of spirits. Spirits that may mimic the Holy Spirit such as a “new age spirit,” but does not guide us to the Truth. So, we are to “test everything; retain what is good” (1 Thessalonians 2:21). How do we know what is good? Good breeds good. It is not good, if it does harm to us or others.

The Holy Spirit will always draw us closer to God our Creator, as a breath of love always draws the love interest closer to the proclaimer of love. As we are His disciples we too have been blessed with the Holy Spirit to guide us to be instrumental in drawing others closer to God.

Let us pray:

Lord Jesus, abide within us

Teach us to trust

Without a doubt

So we may sprout

Holy Spirit, give us your fruit

As a conduit

We share your love

Sent from above

Lord God, guide us to your kingdom

Give us wisdom

To live as proof

You are the Truth
