Reading 1 i Revelation 12:7-12a War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:"Now have salvation and power come, and the Kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed. For the accuser of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night. They conquered him by the Blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death. Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them."
REFLECTION
Today, the Catholic Church honors the Archangels: St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael. Pope St. John Paul II once noted in a general audience that the names of each Archangel reflect an aspect of God's nature. Michael's name means "Who is like God?", Gabriel's signifies "power of God," and Raphael's means "God heals." The "El" at the end of each Archangel's name represents the Hebrew name for God. Therefore, St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael serve as instruments of God, entrusted with a special mission to support His plan of salvation for humanity.
Sacred Tradition describes St. Michael as the Prince of Angels, with duties that include fighting against Satan, protecting God's people, saving souls from devils, especially at death, and bringing souls to judgment. St. Gabriel's role is to deliver good news and provide consolation. St. Raphael's responsibilities include healing, facilitating happy encounters and fruitful marriages, performing acts of mercy, and ensuring safe journeys.
We should express gratitude for God's angels. Remember that they are here to assist and support us, so we should call upon them to intercede for us. They are our friends.
Most Holy Trinity, we thank you for your love for humanity and for never abandoning us. Thank you for sending your angels. Help us to fulfill your Will as your angels do, so that we may complete our mission. Amen.
