"We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law,
and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth."
But Nathanael said to him,
"Can anything good come from Nazareth?"
Philip said to him, "Come and see."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
"Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him."
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."
Nathanael answered him,
"Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Do you believe
because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
You will see greater things than this."
And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
you will see heaven opened and the angels of God
ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
REFLECTION
“COME AND SEE”
I like surprises only if they are in my favor. Though there is a certain feeling of security when in control, I have to work so that it does not become a constant tension between my will and His.
Imagine what my surprise would have been at learning that the Son of God came from a little village of Nazareth and was walking the streets of Galilee. Perhaps this was not what I had in mind.
All my prejudices, biases, fears and assumptions would add to my skepticism that I was meeting the Son of God.
Bartholomew cast away his FEAR (false evidence appearing real) not by his own doing but through the grace of God. Our Lord has said many times, “My grace is enough, my love is enough”.
What has He done with my selfishness as I follow Him? The dull life of self centeredness opens up to His love as I know Him more and more. Once you know Him there is no turning back.
Faith deepens when you allow God to be your support and security.
In humility go to the Cross. Rely on nothing apart from God. Rely on His infinite power and infinite love.
