Reading 1 Acts 6:1-7

As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, "It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."

The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism.

They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them.

The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.

REFLECTION

How timely is this reading about the ordination of the first Deacons. Not long ago we also read about the martyrdom of Stephen.

In the next couple of weeks, our dioceses will ordain transitional and permanent Deacons to serve our communities. These men will help us, aid in the parish life, in many ministries, and will even be able to give some sacraments: they can baptize people, and marry couples.

Permanent Deacons are able to receive all the Sacraments: they can be married, and have received holy orders. Transitional Deacons take a vow of celibacy, since they are aspiring for the Priesthood.

We see the permanent Deacons and their families really involved in the life of the Church and community. And the transitional deacons assisting and learning from their assigned parish priests. Their hope of soon becoming Priests is radiant.

Did you know that we also offer the PAPA Prayer for Priests for many transitional Deacons around the world?

Join us in praying for them, so our soon to be priests are holy and saintly priests that can lead us to God by their words and deeds.

God bless y'all!
