FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 18, 2022, YEAR A

A reading of the holy Gospel according to Mt 1:18-24

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us." When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.

REFLECTION

the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home".

Who is St Joseph? Do we really know him? We know he is a righteous man, he had 4 dreams in which an angel spoke to him of Jesus and he was a carpenter. Most important of all he was picked by God the Father to be the foster father of His Son here on earth.

As we approach Christmas, we focus on the miracle that is to happen. We have heard the story so many times, that we have become immune to this fact--the Son of God came down and became incarnate. He was born into a world where His loved ones lived and He deigned to live among us in poverty.

All this required supernatural understanding by St Joseph. How could he possibly understand all that was happening, unless he had internal revelation. “Revelation” (lat. revelatio) is a translation of the Greek word apokalypsis, which means the removal of a veil so that something can be seen. (1)

St Joseph is our protector and a role model for us as we pursue our walk in life. How many times have we wondered why we are where we are, what are we doing, and why and how we got here? And yet here we are. Praying for priests, defending life, caring for the young, the old, the poor, the needy and the malnourished. God has indeed taken many of us on a mysterious path and most assuredly PAPA is led by His plan.

Let us let God's revealing Word lead us through the mystery of life. Join us for FACE ZBS --a face to face encounter with the Word. If confused about your life, doubtful of your faith, uncertain what your future holds, attend FACE ZBS and you will find yourself walking down a glorious path just as St Joseph did.
