A reading from the Gospel according to Mk 10:1-12

Jesus came into the district of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds gathered around him and, as was his custom, he again taught them. The Pharisees approached him and asked, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?” They were testing him. He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?” They replied, “Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.” But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

REFLECTION:

"The two shall become one flesh"

Imagine, even the disciples were surprised to hear that marriage is for better, for worse, and for a lifetime.

That is what God intended since creation, but man, through Moses, demanded divorce.

When two are gathered together there will be disagreement, pointing of fingers and expectations of different outcomes from the moment the “I do’s” are said. Perfect peace and harmony will not be there. God designed marriage to be what it is. You have to work at its success, hoping for more love, kindness, compassion and mercy.

The tarnish of the "The Knight in Shining Armor" shows up quickly. There will eventually be weight gain, prodigal children, chronic illnesses, loss of mind, physical strength, looks and prowess.

Successful marriages choose to love one another inspite of imperfections. Many “ I am sorry“ are said. Also there should be periods of silence to let disagreements and words float out of the house like bad cooking odors!

When angry, ‘Breathe in Jesus' and let Him have the last word. For “The Lord is kind and merciful“. (Psalm 103)

May we ask the Holy Spirit to teach us how to love and how to live our vocation through, in and with Jesus.

God bless you
