Responsorial Psalm PS 79:8, 9, 11 AND 13

R. (9) For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us. Remember not against us the iniquities of the past; may your compassion quickly come to us, for we are brought very low. R. For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us. Help us, O God our savior, because of the glory of your name; Deliver us and pardon our sins for your name’s sake. R. For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us. Let the prisoners’ sighing come before you; with your great power free those doomed to death. Then we, your people and the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; through all generations we will declare your praise. R. For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us.

"For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us."

Who are Saints Joachim and St. Anne? They are the most famous grandparents. They are the grandparents of Jesus and the parents of the Virgin Mary. Today, July 26th, we celebrate the first Grandparent's Day in history. The Eastern Rite celebrates the Feast Day of St. Joachim and St. Anne on September 9th.

Similar to Abraham and Sarah, St. Joachim and St. Anne were childless and beyond childbearing years. Evenso, they were persistent in praying and offering sacrifices in hopes that God would give them a child. An angel was sent to announce the good news to St. Anne. Their prayers were greatly rewarded. Anne conceived a child full of grace, full of purity, and sinless. She was named Mary.

How do we know anything about the early lives of Joachim, Anne, and Mary since we don't have any information in the Old or New Testaments? "The Protoevangelium", the Gospel of James which the Catholic Church does not sanction, is "apocryphal" writing dated to the second century AD. This writing verifies Mary"s virginity. It tells of Joachim and Anne and the birth of their only child. It tells of their gratitude to God and how they dedicated Mary to God. She was given to the temple and consecrated to God as a Virgin for all her life.

Her parents knew that she was special because the angel said, "The Lord has heard your prayer, and you shall conceive, and shall bring forth; and your seed shall be spoken of in all the world." Therefore, they protected her from anything that could corrupt her or was unclean. They had her blessed by all the priests and made her bedroom into a sanctuary.

Both would not live to see their grandchild, Jesus, but they trusted God and glorified Him for keeping His promise of sending a Savior.

Let us pray that all parents and grandparents will love and protect life like Saint Joachim and St. Anne. Join us in praying our PAPA Prayer for the Unborn.
