Parenting has just begun with the birth of a baby. Years of nourishing, educating and disciplining await. Our duties are done with love and delight with an element of healthy fear.
Saints Joachim and Anne were barren but blessed to have Mary in their late years. They are examples of good parenting. Many paintings depict them in prayer and reading Holy Scripture with Mary, always keeping God as their center.
We, too, are blessed to be taught by the Scriptures. In today's Gospel we are introduced to a parable.
We are sowers of God's love-whether we have children or not. We are to spread His love with whomever God places in our lives.
Our seeds of love may fall on the roadside with birds eating up our efforts.
Rocky road with a little soil might show fruits in our work but the scorching sun and lack of good soil won't allow sustained growth.
Some seed might fall upon thorns, but the few flowers here and there will be overcome by the prickly thorns. With no further access to these flowers, some will not be able to be what they were created to be.
God's seed takes root in rich soil and environment and the finished product will be resplendid in God's glory.
Just what are the pecking birds, the choking thistles, the scorching sun in our lives that fight against God's seed to take root? Bad company, too much social media, lack of discipline and prayer, the world, the flesh and the devil fighting for God's people.
Perseverance in God's work will eventually bring fruit if we stay on the right path. Life is filled with so many beautiful gifts from God. Put to good use these gifts for the common good of building up of the Body of Christ.
