Jesus said to his disciples: "You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna." It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce. But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery."
REFLECTION:
You shall not commit adultery.
Actions speak louder than words. Today we celebrate the memorial of St Anthony of Padua, Doctor of the Church. In a sermon by St Anthony, he spoke that the man who is filled with the Holy Spirit speaks in different languages. He was referring to the languages of humility, poverty, patience and obedience. Our words teach but our actions speak.
Today's Gospel concerns itself with sexual and marital fidelity. We should speak as the Holy Spirit gives us the gift of speech. We should live out the commandments, understanding and emphasizing that marriage is permanent and a life changing institution.
In present time divorce is seen as a quick solution to unhappiness, another love found or a more ambitious route for material wealth. Our Mother Church prepares us for the big step in marriage. There are counselling and marriage preparation sessions, formal programs, individual sessions with priests and deacons, opportunities to engage with married couples for guidance and support. Hopefully, all questions and barriers regarding our decision for marriage will prepare us in this important decision.
Put to good use the different languages given to us by the Holy Spirit in our vocation of marriage. Work for a successful marriage. Invite God to be in your marriage. Help one another make it to heaven.
