ST BONIFACE WITH GERMANIC TRIBAL WARRIORS
ST BONIFACE WITH GERMANIC TRIBAL WARRIORS

Gospel

As Jesus was teaching in the temple area he said, “How do the scribes claim that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, said: The Lord said to my lord, ‘Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet.’ David himself calls him ‘lord’; so how is he his son?” The great crowd heard this with delight.

REFLECTION

“How do the scribes claim that the Christ is the son of David?

Jesus challenges the crowd to recognize that the Messiah is more than just a descendant of King David. Jesus is the Son of God, fully human and fully divine and He has Divine authority.

St Boniface, in the eighth century, travelled among the Germanic pagan people of what is now Germany and the Netherlands proclaiming that Jesus Christ is Lord, just as Jesus challenged the Jewish people. The Germanic people prayed to ancient gods and sacred trees. St Boniface proclaimed that only Jesus is worthy of worship. He cut down a sacred Oak tree of Thor. He emphasized that Christ is the true King and Savior.

Do we believe that Jesus is the Lord of our lives or do we live "paganistic" lives, seeking social idols--success, material goods, comfort, pride --that compete with the love and joy of Jesus?
