MEMORIAL OF ST CLARE, FRIDAY OF THE EIGHTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 11, 2023

Olivia M. Bannan

Gospel

Jesus said to his disciples,

"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,

take up his cross, and follow me."

REFLECTION

We remember the days of youth and beauty. All was before us. We thought it would never end and the future was indeed in the "future".

St Clare was beautiful and rich. She did not desire earthly treasures but wanted to store up heavenly treasures. A great friend of St Francis of Assisi she learned from him how to understand God's voice and devote her life to Christ. She started off with cutting off her hair and wearing rough tunics and being barefooted.

She co-founded the Poor Clares with St Francis of Assisi. They refused to own anything and therefore depended on alms and nothing else. During the war with Frederick II she fought off the army by displaying the Blessed Sacrament on the wall. When she raised the ciborium the soldiers scattered.

Are we able to give up all for God?

Do we want comfort so badly that there is no room for any sacrifice?

Let our faith bring us closer to God, never giving in to laziness and the whims of the world and the flesh.

God Bless You
