MEMORIAL OF ST JOHN CHRYSTOSTOM, BISHOP AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH, FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 2024

Gospel

Lk 6:39-42

Jesus told his disciples a parable: "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother,' Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye, 'when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite!  Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye."

REFLECTION

Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye."

Glaucoma, cataracts, myopia, retinal detachment, weak eye muscles can distort vision and sometimes what we think we see is unreliable.

If we have a speck, dust or eyelash in our eyes, it can be a source of great irritation and perhaps damage to the cornea. Imagine if we are not aware of the damage being done. Imagine the worse case scenario of contracting an infection and being blinded as a complication.

The metaphor of a splinter in the eye illustrates how flaws can blind people. Something is there that does not help us like another person, be compassionate, kind or even willing to forgive. Sometimes we choose to live in that darkness and not try to improve the situation. Sins are a good example how our outlook in life or past experiences allow us to misjudge, ignore or even kill a person's reputation.

We have the great physician--the chief physician, Jesus Christ, who can show us how to deal with ourselves if only we allow Him to cure our ills. As the best skillful doctor, Jesus can heal, pardon and restore our mind, body and spirit. The sacraments, prayers, good priests, saints can show us the way to holiness. And in turn we can be His instruments for others to heal.

Jesus sees us through love. It is in our best interest to do the same for others.

Have a great day!!

God Bless You.
