ST LUCY BEARING LIGHT IN THE FACE OF DARKNESS
ST LUCY BEARING LIGHT IN THE FACE OF DARKNESS

Gospel

As they were coming down from the mountain, the disciples asked Jesus, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" He said in reply, "Elijah will indeed come and restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

REFLECTION:

did to him whatever they pleased.

I have always asked St Lucy to assist me in my eye problems. So, I can vouch for her prompt help.

Who is St Lucy who is the patron saint of the blind, the visually impaired and those with eye trouble? Her eyes were miraculously restored after being gouged out by persecutors. Always pictured with holding a tray of her eyes, she also is the patron saint of the poor and sick, virgins and the city of Syracuse, Sicily and St Lucia (Caribbean Island)

We celebrate her feast day by traditions of light or lighting of candles. Her name is derived from the Latin word lux, meaning "light". No darkness can overcome the Light of the World at Christmas.

With spiritual vision may we see beyond the worldly distractions, and see God's truth and will in our lives. She refused to recant her faith even under torture of gouging her eye; they did to her whatever they pleased. She is an example of fortitude and resistance to the evils of the world.

Can we be a light of hope, truth and charity to those in our family, friends and strangers? Do we have the spiritual strength to stand up and be firm in our convictions of our faith?

Happy Advent!

God Bless You.
