MEMORIAL OF ST PETER CLAVER SEPTEMBER 09, 2022

A reading from the holy Gospel according to LK 6:39-42

Jesus told his disciples a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”

REFLECTION

"No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher."

Through our baptism, God has made us His children and in doing so has given us the many graces needed to achieve the greatest dignity of being a member of His family. Through Jesus Christ we become intimate with the Blessed Trinity.

As babies we rely on Him, as children we speak to Him as a little child with his father and as adults we abandon our will to His loving arms and when fully trained become His disciples. And eventually resemble Jesus our Brother. All through the work of the Holy Spirit who works in us to make us more like Jesus.

St Peter Claver, truly was fully trained to be like his teacher. He saw life through the eyes of Jesus, he obeyed like Jesus and he sought out souls just like Jesus. He understood the plight of the African slaves who came to Columbia as much as 10,000 a month. And like a true servant, he climbed into the filthy, rat infested ships to baptize, feed and save their souls. He gave the slaves dignity which escaped their captors' souls. He succumbed to the complications of the plague.

We, too, are disciples. We too have a mission. We pray for priests to be on fire for Jesus Christ and His Church, the Body and Bride of Christ. Our mission is to make disciples of all nations. And our purpose is to pray and recruit all to pray for priests by any necessary means.

And in doing God's work we not only put a smile of Jesus into the life of anyone we meet, but Jesus has also placed His smile on our faces.

God Bless You
