Gospel

John 1:35-42

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said,“Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah,” which is translated Christ. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas,” which is translated Peter.

REFLECTION

 “What are you looking for?”

Today we celebrate the memorial of St Elizabeth Seton. She once had a conference with her spiritual daughters and what was striking was what she said, "I once read or heard that an interior life means but the continuation of our Saviour's life in us; .....the end of His mission is to lead us into the sweet land of promise, a life of constant union with Himself. And what was the first rule of our dear Saviour's life? You know it was to do his Father's will." St Elizabeth encouraged her sisters to first do the will of God; secondly, to do it in the manner He wills; and thirdly, to do it because it is His will.

St John knew exactly the time he met Jesus. The disciples were ready when they met Him. The time they spent with Jesus was most likely filled with prayer and getting to know Him.

Are we ready to meet Jesus?

What are we looking for as we follow Jesus? To be with Jesus.

How can we accomplish this? First, come and see Jesus. Get to know Him. Keep company with Him. Follow Him through faith and a persevering resolution to do what He asks of us. But what do we do? Keep a life lived for Him. St Elizabeth Seton taught her sisters to work on pride, discontent, impatience and fretting about material things.

May this 2025 bring us closer to Jesus. It is work. Day by day, let us keep company with Jesus.

God Bless You
