Gospel
Lk 6:36-38
Jesus said to his disciples:
"Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
"Stop judging and you will not be judged.
Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.
Forgive and you will be forgiven.
Give and gifts will be given to you;
a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing,
will be poured into your lap.
For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you."
Reflection
“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful”, I love this line because of how simply it is put. In our world today where comparison and judgement are quick to the draw clouding our senses, Jesus’ words cuts through the confusion and shows what it truly means to follow his teachings.
I think many would agree that in our society we have normalized and glamorized the idea of revenge and the notion of “getting even”. The message of mercy and forgiveness has taken a back seat and is considered weak. However, this Gospel reminds us how it is in embracing these virtues that we truly reflect the character of our Heavenly Father. We are called not to judge or condemn others but to extend the same mercy and forgiveness that we ourselves have received.
I think this passage holds particular significance during the season of Lent, a time of reflection, repentance, and renewal. It challenges us to examine our own attitudes and behaviors, especially in moments of fasting and sacrifice. Are we allowing our frustrations or annoyances to dictate how we interact with others? Are we truly offering up the small inconveniences in our lives to God, or are we holding onto them tightly?
I know from personal experience how easy it is to get caught up in the comparing game or allow little annoyances to dictate my behavior, but I challenge you to join me this Lent in taking moments to self reflect and check yourself in these situations. Let's consciously examine our reactions and attitudes, striving to align them with the principles of mercy, forgiveness, and compassion that Jesus teaches.
