A reading from the holy Gospel according to Jn 16:29-33
The disciples said to Jesus,“Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everythingand that you do not need to have anyone question you.Because of this we believe that you came from God.”Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now?Behold, the hour is coming and has arrivedwhen each of you will be scattered to his own homeand you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.I have told you this so that you might have peace in me.In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”
REFLECTION
"In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world."
Do you ever feel someone is watching you and they are? Or that something different is about to happen and it does? Obviously we have to be aware of our surroundings and what is going on around us. Yes, there is trouble in the world.
But what if spiritually someone is watching you or that event that is to happen is the Holy Spirit strengthening us to persevere in this world and making the case for the Kingdom of God. Jesus and His Father seek to dwell in us and in so doing make us His home.
We are anticipating Pentecost, and so we revisit the time before the death of Jesus. In the Last Supper Discourse of John we read it now with the foreknowledge that He will suffer and die and will rise on the third day. There is victory with the Resurrection and the Ascension. Jesus is drawing us closer to Him for that perfect union He desires. And in so doing allows us to see and watch what is yet to happen and to be ready for that big day--the Birth of the Church, Pentecost.
