A reading of the holy Gospel according to Lk 14:12-14
On a sabbath Jesus went to dineat the home of one of the leading Pharisees. He said to the host who invited him,"When you hold a lunch or a dinner,do not invite your friends or your brothers or sistersor your relatives or your wealthy neighbors,in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
REFLECTION
Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.
When we share the banquet of life with others we should give for love of God and not expect anything in return. Our generosity expands and rejuvenates the capacity of our love.
We give with joy to the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, the homeless, the mentally ill, the abandoned and the most irritating. "One cannot love God, except at the cost of oneself." (St Mother Teresa of Calcutta)
Whether we donate money, clothing, food, our time, our care, our listening or praying, all should be done without expecting expecting reciprocation of same or reward in return.
We might never see the fruits of our work, nor realize what good we have done, but we trust in the Lord. With patience we wait on the Lord, and the reward He has in store for us.
"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me." (Matt 25:40)
