Monday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel

LK 21:1-4

When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people

putting their offerings into the treasury

and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins.

He said, “I tell you truly,

this poor widow put in more than all the rest;

for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth,

but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”

Reflection

When I read this Gospel I realized how great the widow’s faith must have been to do something like this. She, even in her poverty gave in abundance with faith that God would provide. When I put myself in her shoes it made me wonder, would I have done the same in her situation?

A visiting priest gave yesterdays homily at my church, and he was there to raise funds for his mission. He talked about there being a final exam when it comes time to see Jesus face to face, and he said that the questions will be… when I was hungry did you feed me, thirsty did you give me drink, stranger and did you welcome me, naked and did you clothe me, in prison and did you visit me? Reading this Gospel today reminded me of his words, and I knew that the widowed woman would have passed this “test”. I think her example can inspire us to strive for a faith like hers, that doesn’t hold back, even when it feels like we have so little to offer.
