Matthew 7:1-5

Jesus said to his disciples:

“Stop judging, that you may not be judged.

For as you judge, so will you be judged,

and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.

Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye,

but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye?

How can you say to your brother,

‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye,’

while the wooden beam is in your eye?

You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from your eye first;

then you will see clearly

to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.”

Reflection

This Gospel is one that hits home for many of us if not all. This line is relevant even now, “Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you". Especially today, in a time with social media where we are separated from the face to face aspect of communication and desensitized to mindlessly scroll or interact with others giving no thought to the possible consequences. We are so quick to judge, like, or comment on posts given that it happens instantly and it is easily accessible to do so. However, how many comments would not be sent if we gave a moments pause and thought about what we were actually saying, and reflected on the repercussions to our soul. Would we say what we are writing to someones face? In this digital age it is all too easy to become out of touch with reality, but what can help bring us back is self reflection and coming back to the word of God. Instead of focusing on others and the lives they post about we should be focusing on our own and our relationship with God. Comparison is the thief of joy but scripture and remaining close to Him restores it.
