OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES, THURSDAY FEBRUARY 11, 2021

A Gospel according to Jn 2:1-11

There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee,

and the mother of Jesus was there.

Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.

When the wine ran short,

the mother of Jesus said to him,

"They have no wine."

And Jesus said to her,

"Woman, how does your concern affect me?

My hour has not yet come."

His mother said to the servants,

"Do whatever he tells you."

Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings,

each holding twenty to thirty gallons.

Jesus told them,

"Fill the jars with water."

So they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them,

"Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter."

So they took it.

And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine,

without knowing where it came from

(although they who had drawn the water knew),

the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him,

"Everyone serves good wine first,

and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one;

but you have kept the good wine until now."

Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee

and so revealed his glory,

and his disciples began to believe in him.

REFLECTION: "His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

Most of us are familiar with the story of Our Lady of Lourdes. In 1858 the Virgin Mary appeared to a 14 year old girl named Bernadette in Lourdes, France.

Ever since, people have made pilgrimages to the place where Our Lady appeared.

I wonder if today pilgrims might be able to visit Lourdes on her feast day.

Many of us wish we could be there with her. We had plans to travel and maybe ask for healing for ourselves, or for a loved one.

Covid changed all this.

What I know is that this is not my will that is being done. It is God's.

At this time, we cannot go there yet. So, how do I go "over there"?

Many cities have replicas of the grotto in Lourdes. Maybe we could visit one of these places with the same fervor and devotion as if we were in France.

Maybe what we have to do is to invite Our Lady to come here. To visit our homes. To dwell in our cities, in our homes, and in our hearts.

She can help us see what it is her Son wants us to do.

Our Lady of Lourdes, Heal our country.
