REFLECTION

The Stella Maris (Star of the Seas), a Carmelite monastery, stands on the southwestern slope of Mount Carmel overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Haifa, Israel. The beautiful church is built over a cave traditionally associated with the prophet Elijah, symbolizing the continuity between the Old Testament prophet and the Carmelite vocation of prayer and contemplation.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Patroness of the Carmelite Order. The devotion originated on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, where Christian hermits settled in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Inspired by the prophet Elijah, these hermits built a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom they honored as their Mother, Protectress, and Model of contemplative prayer. The Carmelites have always seen Mary as the one who leads every disciple to Christ through a life of listening, prayer, and faithful obedience.

According to longstanding Jewish, Christian, and Muslim tradition, Elijah's Cave on Mount Carmel is one of the places where the prophet Elijah lived, prayed, and sought refuge. Situated beneath the Stella Maris Monastery, the grotto is a sacred site where the prophet Elijah is said to have prayed and hid from Jezebel. Many people leave messages and prayer intentions there.

The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on July 16. It is closely associated with the Brown Scapular, a sign of consecration to Mary and a reminder to imitate her faith, purity, humility, and complete trust in God. The scapular is an invitation to live as faithful disciples of Jesus under Mary's maternal care.
