On another occasion, Jesus began to teach by the sea.
A very large crowd gathered around him
so that he got into a boat on the sea and sat down.
And the whole crowd was beside the sea on land.
And he taught them at length in parables,
and in the course of his instruction he said to them,
"Hear this! A sower went out to sow.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path,
and the birds came and ate it up.
Other seed fell on rocky ground where it had little soil.
It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep.
And when the sun rose, it was scorched and it withered for lack of roots.
Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it
and it produced no grain.
And some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit.
It came up and grew and yielded thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold."
REFLECTION
"A sower went out to sow."
Do we realize that every time we interact with others we are also sowing?
Good deeds, or bad ones. Our words and even our gestures. They all give testimony of who we are and what we believe in.
Is easier to talk about our beliefs and convictions with people we barely know than with those in our own families. Why? because they have seen us at our worst.
And at the same time, on the road towards God, and as we grow in Him, our own family members can start to see that "change for the better".
Many years ago, I commented to my spiritual director that some of my family members were not quite thrilled about me attending certain church events. To what he responded: "Ask them if by you attending these events, are you better or worst than you were before".
This has been a great advise for the rest of my life. It helps me center myself whenever I think I am not doing the right thing. Or when I think I'm am correct and they are not.
