Jesus was going through a field of grain on the sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath." He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry, how he went into the house of God and ate the bread of offering, which neither he nor his companions but only the priests could lawfully eat? Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests serving in the temple violate the sabbath and are innocent? I say to you, something greater than the temple is here. If you knew what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned these innocent men. For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath."
Reflection
His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them.
The Pharisees strike me as believing themselves to be suave and coy, sophisticated, learned, smooth in their way of being and having some worldly experience. They are many times with Jesus, giving the semblance of following Him for their belief, but always asking questions to catch Him in the trap they lay before Him.
By observing Jesus we see and hear how He deals with people. In our PAPA teachings, we learn, too, the importance of being SUAVE.
S. Silence before speaking or answering
U. Unite our thoughts and words with the Lord before speaking.
A. Affirm the person speaking.
V. Verify what was said.
E. Encourage dialogue or discussion with peace and clarity.
Note: There is no mention of emotions or reacting to negative words by way of anger, fuming at being questioned or walking around on eggshells. Sometimes negative reactions to words spoken to us can be the end of a fair and decent discussion. Too many times we take umbrage at being corrected , told we messed up or the person takes away their friendship or how they used to treat you as a means of perhaps punishing you or getting their way.
God loves us and nothing can ever separate us from that love. So if we adhere to being SUAVE, whether we lose friends or acquaintances, we should be able to express and show the love of Jesus to everyone with no fear.
God Bless You. Please pray for our priests and for one another.
