"He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain—and so it does; and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot—and so it is.
You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?" (Lk. 12: 54-56)
REFLECTION
Jesus was clearly angry! Being attentive to the weather - the temporal things - are important, yet the crowd could not recognize the long awaited Messiah; Jesus - God in the flesh; standing directly in front of them!
In our day, we now have professional weather forecasters, satellites, radars, and air planes for weather reconnaissance to predict the weather; it's all good; but do 'we' interpret the present time? Jesus told us that He would return like a thief in night, that is, unexpectedly. We proclaim His return at every Mass. Is that on our radar, do we care, or even believe that He will return?
Jesus went so far as to give us signs; clues; to watch for; not the wars and rumors of war that have always been present but unusual, abnormal signs; the intensity and frequency of them. With many parables He warned us to be diligent and continuously watchful, otherwise, like five of the ten maidens who went out to meet the bride groom, foolishly ran out of oil before the bride groom arrived. We must remain watchful by keeping our soul prepared, daily, by making Him the starting point of our day with simple prayers to orient ourself toward God as we prepare for the day. By doing this daily, the cumulative effect over a lifetime, will prepare our soul for heaven.
We who are Catholics, have so much spiritual armor for defense: the Word of God, the Sacraments, especially Confession; and weapons for offense: the Mass, the Rosary, Novenas, and more. We can and must be ready for His return. If we die before then, nothing is lost, but heaven is gain; and the second death will not harm us.
