"Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it."

REFLECTION

Jesus often teaches with natural phenomena for example: when a seed dies, it is born again as a new creation that bears fruit; if the seed does not die, it remains just a seed that can't bear fruit.

In the context of this chapter, He is talking about His second coming and, ""They said to him in reply, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will gather.”" (Lk. 17: 37)

We've all seen the familiar sight of vultures circling in the distance and we think to ourselves, there must be the body of a dead animal out there - a cow, a dear, or some other large animal. Interestingly, these vultures do not bother live animals, only dead or sick ones.

The enemy of our soul, the devil and his demons, are more prone to circle overhead when we are spiritually weak, or dead - remember the parable of the man who had an unclean spirit come out of him but after sometime it came back with other unclean spirits more wicked than himself  (Lk 11:26). To be sure, even when we are spiritually alive, they attempt to harm us but they can't, unless we consent to sin, which kills the soul, thus, Confessing our sins is essential and pleading for Our Lord's protection daily.

Therefore, become a new creation in Christ, check your pulse regularly (self-examination of the soul), keep an eye open for vultures. If they’re circling around everywhere, it’s a bad sign. Pray and stay alive!
