As they were coming down from the mountain, the disciples asked Jesus,“Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”He said in reply, “Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.”Then the disciples understoodthat he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.
REFLECTION
"So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.”
We have been singing, "Prepare the way of the Lord" for daily Mass. The role of the returned Elijah was to pave the way of the Messiah. And that is exactly what John the Baptist did. Though he came from the line of the Levites, John the Baptist gave all this up for the role of being the last prophet to proclaim the coming of the Messiah.
How were people to know that Jesus was the Messiah: sharing the truth of Jesus coming into people's lives? John the Baptist was a fiery prophet. The prophets faced challenges, obstacles, hardships and even death. John the Baptist was beheaded by Herod, Herodius and his court. Jesus, too, would face the same reality. He saw His passion and death. "So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.”
Open up You Tube and you will find many passionate speakers of the Word of the Lord. How can we tell if what they are saying is the truth or are they false prophets? Are they leading many down the wrong path?
Thought of the Day: God reveals to all the mystery of His Kingdom. Do we give witness to Jesus, the Son of Man, who came down to redeem us? Can people see in us Jesus? Or are we false prophets, dutifully proclaiming the life of Jesus to all, but do our actions and our deeds, our words and our thoughts tell people more of who we really are and what we truly believe?
