After staying in Antioch some time, Paul left and traveled in orderly sequence through the Galatian country and Phrygia, bringing strength to all the disciples.
A Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, an eloquent speaker, arrived in Ephesus. He was an authority on the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord and, with ardent spirit, spoke and taught accurately about Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the Way of God more accurately. And when he wanted to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. After his arrival he gave great assistance to those who had come to believe through grace. He vigorously refuted the Jews in public, establishing from the Scriptures that the Christ is Jesus.
REFLECTION
they took him aside and explained to him the Way of God more accurately.
Our goal is to go back to God and to live glorified in Him. In this world we strife for holiness and eternal bliss with God. And as we grow in knowledge of Him, we are called to evangelize to those whom God puts in our lives. We stay on course and do what we know is right. We, however, must be humble in our work. There is no time to show off or blather words in talking to people.
Humility is the basis of the three theological virtues: faith, hope and charity. There are people, books, and history that ignite the love for wisdom. Before we can share what we think we know, we need to be willing to receive correction. That is why when it comes to understanding our faith the writings of the saints, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Holy Bible are very important.
Are we to interpret on our own that which we read? Would we practice medicine, law, or accounting/business without proper training? Jesus taught Paul, Paul taught his disciples. Apollos became an authority on the Scriptures, because he had been instructed in the Way of the Lord. But even he needed to hear from others, such as Priscilla and Aquila, for a better understanding of the Way of God.
Our weekly bible study gives us an opportunity to learn from a priest theologian, who clarifies and explains. To discuss with one another what we read and not be embarrassed asking questions. To have better answers to the questions that our grandchildren, our Protestant friends, or even fellow Catholics pose. I hear, "It is too much work to prepare for the Bible study", "I am afraid of speaking for fear that I am wrong", "It is too long". "I belong to another bible study or prayer group."
Do not forget the goal. Anything we do to better ourselves takes work. Losing weight and toning, preparing for holiday family and meals, preparing for exams to name a few.
