SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JULY 21, 2024

Gospel Mk 6:30-34

The apostles gathered together with Jesus

and reported all they had done and taught.

He said to them,

“Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”

People were coming and going in great numbers,

and they had no opportunity even to eat.

So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.

People saw them leaving and many came to know about it.

They hastened there on foot from all the towns

and arrived at the place before them.

When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd,

his heart was moved with pity for them,

for they were like sheep without a shepherd;

and he began to teach them many things.

REFLECTION

"His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd"

The events on this passage of Mark happen right after the first commission of the twelve apostles, the death of John the Baptist, and before the feeding of the five thousand.

He probably was tired with all the comings and goings. Probably sad when he heard of the death of his cousin, John the Baptist. The Apostles just got back from their apostolic journey and tried to tell Him all the wondrous things they had done, and with all the people about them, Jesus tells them to come over and find a deserted place.

However, this was not to be. People follow them, and even got there before Jesus and the apostles. So when Jesus saw them, He felt pity for them. And continued teaching and preaching.

Do you know of a priest that gives his 110% to his flock? Have you seen this man, tired, maybe even old and infirm because of all the hardships he has endured throughout his life?

It could even be a cranky old crochety priest that has a short fuse, but is always there when the poor call, when he says Mass, gives confession, visits the sick and dying...

Priests even wear black, symbolizing how the priest dies to himself so that God increases in his life *, just like John the Baptist said about Jesus (Jn 3:30).

Pray with us the PAPA Prayer for Priests so all our pastors become true shepherds of God's flock.

Ask us how you can join us praying for our priests, or let us know of a priest you want us to pray for with you.

God bless y'all!
