SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 16, 2020

Writer's picture: Maria KnoxMaria Knox

Sirach 15: 15-20

If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you;

if you trust in God, you too shall live;

he has set before you fire and water

to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand.

Before man are life and death, good and evil,

whichever he chooses shall be given him.

Immense is the wisdom of the Lord;

he is mighty in power, and all-seeing.

The eyes of God are on those who fear him;

he understands man’s every deed.

No one does he command to act unjustly,

to none does he give license to sin.

Reflection: "The eyes of God are on those who fear him..."

Today's readings remind us that the Ten Commandments are still the GPS of our life. In Jesus' time there was no GPS --Global Positioning Systems--. What is GPS? It is an "accurate worldwide navigational and surveying facility based on the reception of signals from an array of orbiting satellites". Think about it--thousands of signals coming from an array of satellites telling us where to go. And if we heed the directions, we will not get lost. Or so I thought.

My GPS sometimes takes me to lands unknown if I use my car GPS map. That is because it is 10 years old and a lot of new development has occurred. My car map needs to be updated or I will not be able to use. This is the same with Our Lord. I need to continuously freshen my relationship with God so that I don’t get lost. "The eyes of God are on those who fear him..."

With Lent fast approaching there are many opportunities to prepare for fasting and almsgiving. So many prayer services, retreats, volunteer opportunities, reconciliation services and sacrifices to help us find, follow and be closer to God.

Praying for the spiritual renewal to celebrate Easter.

God Bless
