THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH, MEMORIAL, MAY 29, 2023

Gospel

“Behold, your mother.”

REFLECTION

Our Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of Jesus Christ and Mother of the redeemed people. On November 21, 1964, Pope Paul VI solemnly confirmed that title of Mary, Mother of the Church.

Pope St John Paul II said that the title "Mother of the Church" reflects the deep conviction of the Christian faithful who see in Mary not only the mother of Jesus Christ, but also of the faithful. She is the mother of salvation, life and grace of the saved and of the living.

In 2018, Pope Francis added a feast day under this title for the Monday following the solemnity of Pentecost, the birthday of the church.

Mary's Motherhood is outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#964-975).

"By pronouncing her "fiat" at the Annunciation and giving her consent to the Incarnation, Mary was already collaborating with the whole work her Son was to accomplish. She is mother wherever He is Savior and head

of the Mystical Body." (973)

"Mary was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven, where she already shares in the glory of her Son's Resurrection, anticipating the resurrection of all members of His Body." (974)

"We believe that the Holy Mother of God, the new Eve, Mother of the Church, continues in heaven to exercise her maternal role on behalf of the members of Christ". ( 975)(Pope Paul VI)

We are so happy that the Mother of God is our mother as well. She is the mother of the priests and every priest knows that. Mary helps shape the heart of the priests. She protects the priests from dangers, exhaustion and discouragement and in doing so the priests grow in wisdom, age and grace before God and before men.

PAPA prays for priests. Our Mother Mary is our patron and we pray the rosary daily. The Catholic priesthood is inseparable from Mary's maternal action and presence. Mary is present in the priestly life and ministry. (https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cclergy/documents/rc_con_cclergy_doc_19071997_conri_en.html)
