Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled." And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior."
REFLECTION
And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior."
Names have significance and meaning. When one knows the name of a person, conversations become personal and we feel comfortable speaking with them. Today we celebrate the Most Holy Name of Mary. She is the Mother of God and as our mother she intercedes for us. We call on her to intercede when we are in trouble, when our weaknesses cannot be shaken, when our loved ones are far away from God.
The original name of the Virgin Mary in Aramaic was Miryam or Maryam. The name was translated into Greek as Maria or Mariam. Mary is the anglicized form of these Greek names. The meaning of the name Mary includes "beloved," 'bitter," or "drop of the sea".
On September 12, 1683, the Battle of Vienna was fought. The Christian forces of the holy Roman Empires and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, under the command of Poland's King John III Sobieski, were victorious against the significantly larger Ottoman Empire's forces.Prior to this battle, King John III Sobieski had entrusted his troops to the Blessed Virgin Mary, visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa. The victory was attributed to her intercession, and in gratitude in 1684 Pope Innocent XI instituted the Feast of the Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary into the universal calendar of the Church.
I personally have many stories when my mother Mary intervened in difficult situations. Many abundant graces and mercy Mother Mary has obtained for me and my family from her Son.
