THE QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, SATURDAY OF THE TWENTIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 22, 2026

Gospel

Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying,“The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation ‘Rabbi.’ As for you, do not be called ‘Rabbi.’ You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven. Do not be called ‘Master’; you have but one master, the Christ. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

REFLECTIONS

"Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

The Gospel message today is that greatness is found in humility and service. Mary, the Mother of God , never sought attention for herself, no titles. The religious leaders of the day sought attention, recognition, titles and honor. Mary lived what Jesus taught. At Bethlehem, Cana, Calvary, and Pentecost, she remained close to Jesus while quietly serving God's plan.

Her attitude of not my glory, but God's (Magnificat) ; His will, not mine (the Annunciation) ; serve and not be served (the Visitation of Mary immediately rushing to help Elizabeth) bely what our priests should also practice. They should not seek offices, titles, live in expensive homes, drive expensive cars nor expect laudits. They find true dignity in proclaiming God’s Word, forgiving sins, celebrating the Eucharist, and bringing Christ to His people.

Mary, the Mother of Priests, the Queen of Heaven teaches priests humility. PAPA's mission is to pray for priests—not that they become important in the eyes of the world, but that they become holy in the eyes of God—humble servants who lead souls to Jesus.
