THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD, JANUARY 22, 2023

ree

September 30th is the Feast of St Jerome, the man who translated most of the Bible into Latin and who said, "Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ."

On his feast day on September 30, 2019, Pope Francis established the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time to be devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God in his Apostolic Letter, Motu proprio "Aperuit illis".

"Motu Proprio" means he deemed his personal reasons were sufficient enough to issue the letter to the people by his own accord and not on the advice of the Cardinals or any other advising body. "Aperuit illis" means “opened to them.”

He titled the letter after Luke 24:45, “He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” . After the Resurrection Jesus came back and on the road to Emmaus taught them the scriptures and opened their minds to all that happened through Salvation History. Jesus interpreted, the first catechesis, to help us understand the depth and breadth of the Word of God.

The gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost safeguards all these teachings passed on from generation to generation. God wants us to know His Word, understand it and be able to teach others. It is not our personal interpretation, nor about how we feel the scripture is talking to us but it is knowing and understanding the Scriptures without error.

In Scripture, God talks to us, converses with us, tells us how much He loves us. We need to devout time to understanding what He is telling us. PAPA has the privilege of being taught the Scriptures by a theologian, Father Michael, our spiritual advisor. The Bible study held every Wednesday is unique. We hear the Word and it is explained correctly so that we can understand what Jesus accomplished by His passion, death and resurrection.

We have the special opportunity to ask questions and to have what we don't understand explained before moving on.

Proper catechesis for evangelization is so central to spreading the Word of God. Please join us every Wednesday. Visit our website papamio.org and contact us if you want to join us for FACE ZBS (face to face, zoom bible study). Our site has many videos of our bible studies. Become acquainted with PAPA FACE ZBS.

God Bless You and have a peaceful and joyous Sunday.
