"but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him"
REFLECTION
Jesus appears mysteriously to the depressed and disillusioned disciples on the road to Emmaus on the afternoon of his Resurrection. The two disciples shared their shattered dreams and hopes with Him. They did not recognize the stranger who joined them.
Their conversation included their disappointment that they thought Jesus was the Messiah who would free Israel. Jesus proceeds to explain through scriptures that the very fulfilment of the expectation of the Messiah had been accomplished through the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus.
It is at the moment of the breaking of the bread and the explanation of the scriptures that their hearts burned. They were transformed as they realize the stranger is the Risen Jesus.
Jesus listened to their complaints, doubts, fears and then patiently explained to them His Resurrection and Salvation.
What would have happened to these two disciples if they had not been encouraged, taught and instructed on the Resurrection? We should listen to and encourage those who are sullen, sad, overwhelmed, tearful, fearful and disappointed. We should also learn our faith, understand the scriptures and share with one another. Let us be the light for others and let them feel the sweetness and the closeness of the Lord.
