THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 24, 2021

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mk 10:46-52

As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, son of David, have pity on me." And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, "Son of David, have pity on me." Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you." He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see." Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you." Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

REFLECTION

"Call him." "What do you want me to do for you?"

"Take courage, get up, Jesus is calling you."

Did you know that God wants us to be great?

When we are in tears, God, our Father, seeks us out to console and guide us. Our guide is the Holy Spirit, the God of strength and light. And like Bartimaeus our eyes will open at His command and we will see the greatness of God. And with His light we will see our sins great and small with a different perspective and the horror of not pleasing God.

And how do we get the Holy Spirit? We seek Him through fasting, almsgiving, prayer, confession and the Holy Eucharist. We do good deeds for the sake of Christ. Without the Holy Spirit we labor in vain.

Is pride driving us? Is popularity and worldly possessions consuming us? Our magazines show beautiful people, palatial residences, the best ever plastic surgery and many want all this. But is this what we ask God for when He asks us what we want Him to do for us?

Do we get all sad or mopey if we do not do well or not excel? Through the Holy Spirit we will receive His fruits. But the Holy Spirit comes and goes depending if we commit sin or not. Take care that if the spirit seems to be waning in our life, go to confession, prayer and say a novena to the Holy Spirit. Work hard to be holy so that when Jesus says, " What do you want me to do for you?" we will be ready to answer.
