Gospel

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law tested him by asking, "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."

REFLECTION

"You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, Bishop, Doctor of the Church, founder of the Redemptorists and PAPA patron preached a sermon specifically on Matthew 22:37 entitled “On the Love of God”.

1. The only thing necessary is to love God.

He taught that neither riches, honors, reputation, nor worldly achievements are the ultimate purpose of our lives. Everything finds its true value in our love for God.

He challenged Christians to examine whether God truly occupies first place in their hearts.

2. Love God for His own sake.

St. Alphonsus explained that we should not love God merely because we desire Heaven or fear Hell.

We should love Him because He is infinitely good and worthy of our love.

This is a profound distinction. Are we loving God because of what He can give us, or simply because of who He is?

In The School of Christian Perfection, he teaches that genuine charity means loving God for His own sake.

3. We cannot love God without loving our neighbor.

St. Alphonsus wrote:

“It is impossible to love the Lord our God without at the same time loving our neighbor.”

He emphasized that the two commandments Jesus gives us are inseparable.

If we truly love God, we must also love those whom God loves.

He teaches that this charity must be expressed through our thoughts, words, and actions. It includes refusing to harbor resentment, avoiding unkind judgments, speaking charitably, and helping those in need.

4. Our love must lead us to do God's will.

St. Alphonsus taught that loving God means seeking His will, avoiding what offends Him, and desiring that others come to love Him.

He encouraged Christians to help kindle the fire of divine love in other hearts through prayer and good example.

Thoughts to meditate on:

Our greatest achievement in life is not how much we have done, but how much we have loved God and allowed that love to transform our relationships with others.

This is especially meaningful for those who pray for priests. We do not simply pray that priests will accomplish great things. We pray that they will be on fire with love for Jesus, so that their love may inspire others to love Him.
