THURSDAY OF THE SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE LEGAL PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN, JANUARY 22, 2026

Gospel

Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples. A large number of people followed from Galilee and from Judea. Hearing what he was doing, a large number of people came to him also from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from beyond the Jordan, and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon. He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him. He had cured many and, as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him. And whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him and shout, “You are the Son of God.” He warned them sternly not to make him known.

REFLECTION

"pressing upon Him to touch Him"

Drawn by His wonderful deeds and miracles, many followed Jesus There was no fear or trepidation as they had faith in Him and therefore trusted Him. They desired healing from their afflictions and Jesus did not leave them. He ministered to the people for it was by touching Him faithfully that their ‘ faith made them whole’.

Jesus performed many miracles, rebuked demons, healed those with incurable diseases. In doing so He displayed not only His divine power but how much He loved them. He treated all with dignity. He searches for us as His love is without boundaries.

The US Bishops, in commemoration of the Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, designated January 22, Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children and the start of “Sanctity of Human Life Week/Month” culminating in the annual March for Life.

What do we say to Jesus about abortion when He has done so much for us, loves us and gives each and every one of us dignity? Do we meet Him with indifference, hesitation, skepticism or do we show our mutual love with obedience and expectant faith as we pray for the end of this culture of death. Many abortion clinics have been closed and many new laws protect the nascent baby.

Unfortunately, the abortion pill may be purchased on line or from another state, from border towns, some states have not banned abortions and others have no gestational limit. There is no uniform federal law. Some states prohibit abortion at any stage of pregnancy with few exceptions; others permit it up to a certain point in pregnancy, while some allow abortion throughout a pregnancy.

Prayer unites us with God and we should pray for change of hearts and the end of all abortions and therefore promoting life.

Please join us in our prayer for the nascent baby. Here.

God Bless You
