Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening,
and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying,
“John has been raised from the dead”;
others were saying, “Elijah has appeared”;
still others, “One of the ancient prophets has arisen.”
But Herod said, “John I beheaded.
Who then is this about whom I hear such things?”
And he kept trying to see him.
REFLECTION
And he kept trying to see him.
How comfortable it is to see Jesus in the Holy Sacrament. If we were to see Him in His glorified Body, we could not endure it. Yet, He endures us and patiently seeks us and waits for us to visit.
Am I to hope to see Him in my weaknesses, my lukewarmness, my imperfections especially after offending Him over and over? For this, He has given us chances to get to know Him, feeding us with His Body and Blood and giving every opportunity to right ourselves in confession.
There are some people that make me uncomfortable—because of who they are. Would it not be easier to sit and chat with the king if he was disguised and looked like me? Would it not be easier to talk with a person of position without the trappings of the office, robes, uniforms or their authority in full display ?
God has so many ways of letting us see Him, not by our bodily eyes but by His showing Himself to our souls. (St Teresa of Avila): the poor, the homeless, the mother of 3 with kids misbehaving at Church, the sick, the weak, and the many Jesus brings to our lives.
Be awake, alert, attuned and aware of His presence. Visit Him daily, be nourished by Him and one day we will all be able to see Him in His full glory.
