the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours
searched and investigated it
investigating the time and circumstances
that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated
when it testified in advance
to the sufferings destined for Christ
and the glories to follow them.
It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you
with regard to the things that have now been announced to you
by those who preached the Good News to you
through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven,
things into which angels longed to look.
Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly,
and set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you
at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Like obedient children,
do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance
but, as he who called you is holy,
be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct,
for it is written, Be holy because I am holy.
REFLECTION
"Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly,
and set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you
at the revelation of Jesus Christ."
Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Carnaval are just some of the names we give to today, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.
Many of us have been thinking on "what to give up for Lent", and plan on having one very decadent meal today: Lots of bacon, extra large ice cream shake, beads, dancing and drinking...
Some fun is OK, but it is when we go to the extreme where we commit serious sins because "tomorrow we'll fast" is when we really are not understanding the meaning of Lent.
Saint Peter is exhorting us "not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance".
It is good to make a plan for Lent. Find a good Catholic book to read. And yes, have fun today. Find the origin of why this day is called Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras. Share this knowledge with your friends and family. These are the traditions that bring us closer to our roots and our Church.
Have a very blessed season of Lent. Pray the Breathing Jesus prayer throughout the road to Jerusalem.
