Tuesday of the Third Week of Easter

The crowd said to Jesus: “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written:

He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”

So Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

So they said to Jesus, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

REFLECTION

Rumblings and growling sounds caused by contractions in the stomach and intestines, an empty feeling in the stomach, lack of energy, headaches, trouble concentrating are all symptoms of hunger. A scratchy throat, dry mouth, thick saliva, muscle cramps, confusion, light-headed feelings are all signs of thirst or dehydration.

The average length of time to starve to death is 40 to 70 days or less. If you are without water, then it will take 3-7 days, or faster if you are in extreme heat.

The Israelites complained in the desert that they were starving. God gave them bread from heaven. Jesus multiplied the bread and fish to feed the five thousand and even had food left over. Yet, they ask for a sign to prove that Jesus is the Messiah.

Jesus tells them,“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

Why is it so hard to believe in Jesus? Why is it so hard to believe that Jesus is the bread of life? Even when Jesus died and rose from the dead His own disciples didn't understand all that Jesus was telling them and showing them. It wasn't until Jesus ascended into heaven and the Holy Spirit came upon them that they believed. Their minds were opened to understand.

The Eucharist is Jesus' body, blood, soul and divinity. He is the bread of life! Whoever believes this will never hunger or thirst!

Let us pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on humanity.

So, that we will open our hearts and minds to understand Jesus' teachings.

Here is the prayer to the Holy Spirit!
