REFLECTION

Gosh these readings are rich! I could take so many things from them, but there are two main things that stood out to me from the readings today. The first is from the first reading, and it is the way God got Moses’ attention. The second is from the Gospel and is how He reveals things to the childlike.  I think these things stood out to me because they are forms of communication with God; how He communicates with us and the disposition we need to be able to receptive.  I also just find it so amazing how He wants to be near us without forcing us to be near Him.

In the first reading God calls out from a bush that is burning but not consumed. This piqued Moses’ curiosity and he decides to go over and investigate.  God got Moses’ attention with something incredible, something impossible! This makes me think of all the impossible things I’ve experienced in my life and how, looking back, I see God’s hand in those moments. The birth of a baby, the moment you make it to the top of a mountain on a hike and look out over mountain tops, a song played at the exact moment you need it, etc. He does the same with us that he does with Moses. Through miracles and beauty and wonder he captivates our senses.

In the Gospel, we learn how God reveals hidden things to the childlike. When I think of a child, I think of surrender, vulnerability, and trust. They are (sometimes) obedient to those in authority which requires humility. I can remember when one of my sisters was little she would always ask “cause why?” after everything.  She was trying to figure things out, she was curious, and she trusted what we would say/teach. What I take away from this message in the Gospel is that we need to be humble and surrender to God so we can grow in faith, but we also need to have trust.

Moses’ childlike curiosity drew him near to God. One of my favorite parts of Catholicism is how much it uses our senses: taste, smell, site, touch, and hearing. In today’s world, it is so easy to numb yourself off to the monotony of living, to go through the motions per se. Like Moses, let us notice what the Lord is putting in our path and trust in God’s promises to us.
