A reading of the holy Gospel according to Jn 17:11b-19
Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying:“Holy Father, keep them in your namethat you have given me,so that they may be one just as we are one. When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me,and I guarded them, and none of them was lostexcept the son of destruction,in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you.I speak this in the worldso that they may share my joy completely.I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the worldany more than I belong to the world.I do not ask that you take them out of the worldbut that you keep them from the Evil One.They do not belong to the worldany more than I belong to the world.Consecrate them in the truth.Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world,so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for them,so that they also may be consecrated in truth.”
REFLECTION
"Jesus prayed"
The Son of God came to this earth to save man from sin and its consequences. He is now facing a monumental emotional and physical extreme suffering but His will is His Father's and He is obedient. This was His purpose, this is what He will do.
He knows His Father; He trusts Him. His love for us, though knowing how frail and at times contemptible we can be, has Jesus praying for us. His soul continued to be with God, yet, His human nature was to experience the lowest and most profound depth of human suffering. Yet He prayed for us.
When someone suffers, when someone is hungry or when someone dies, we are quick to offer prayer. We know what suffering, hunger and death are. We know how it feels. Trust in God, for He does not ask of us anything that His Son was asked.
Jesus intervenes for us, praying to His Father. And what do we do? Many of us will go about our own way without asking for guidance or assistance or consulting with God. The priest who is "persona in Christi" can give invaluable advice and counsel both in our life here on earth and certainly in our spiritual journey. Take advantage that as Jesus prays for us, our priest will also pray for us. In fact, he will offer the best prayer which is the Holy Mass.
