WEDNESDAY OF THE THIRTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, JULY 1, 2026

Reading 1

Seek good and not evil, that you may live; Then truly will the LORD, the God of hosts, be with you as you claim! Hate evil and love good, and let justice prevail at the gate; Then it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will have pity on the remnant of Joseph. I hate, I spurn your feasts, says the LORD, I take no pleasure in your solemnities; your cereal offerings I will not accept, nor consider your stall-fed peace offerings. Away with your noisy songs! Iwill not listen to the melodies of your harps. But if you would offer me burnt offerings, then let justice surge like water, and goodness like an unfailing stream.

REFLECTION

Hate evil and love good, and let justice prevail at the gate; Then it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will have pity on the remnant of Joseph.

What was happening in Israel during the time of Amos? Has our world changed at all since 760-750 BC?

  • The wealthy were becoming richer while the poor were being exploited.

  • Judges accepted bribes instead of administering justice

  • Merchants cheated customers with dishonest scales, or now adays, with "bait and switch " gimmicks, selling time shares that one can never get out from under their heavy weight.

  • The poor were sold into slavery over small debts, or in modern times, high level interests are incurred with the debtor never able to get good credit or pay up all of what he owes.

  • Religious festivals were celebrated with great ceremony, but people's hearts were far from God.

  • Many believed that because they offered sacrifices, God would continue to bless them regardless of how they lived.

The message has not changed and it seems that every generation BC or AD need the prophets or priests to remind us of our shortcomings and how we must change to become worthy of God.

"There must come a time for each responsible person when options are closed, a way of life is chosen and perseverance in that way of life will be the actual expression of our dedication to God. " (Sister Ruth Burrows, OCD, † 2023, Norfolk, England)

God Bless You!
